The British journalist and activist Ash Sarkar is one of the most engaging members of the group of leftwing radicals who make up Novara Media. Established in 2011, in the long wake of the GFC, and at the dawn of Prime Minister David Cameron’s savage reign of austerity, Novara now has over a million subscribers, not least because of Sarkar’s ambassadorship in the otherwise solidly centrist world of mainstream UK political commentary. One media moment in particular has come to encapsulate this role. Invited onto Good Morning Britain to talk about the ‘Stop Trump’ march in London in 2018, she very eloquently lost her shit with the program’s obnoxious host, Piers Morgan, who wanted to know why lefties like her had one rule for Republican presidents and another for Democrats like Barack Obama. Visibly exasperated by this plonking non sequitur, Sarkar called Morgan an ‘idiot’ and explained that she had long been a critic of the Democrats, being ‘literally a communist’. [More here.]
